Who is Rouleau For?

Rouleau is for people who want more than a workout. It’s for people who want to know their body - to understand what makes it stronger, steadier and more capable, and to feel confident rather than confused (or afraid when things change).

This fall, in The Responsive Body, we’ll use movement to build strength, balance, coordination and skill while learning how to work with your body - to feel it more clearly, discover capacities you may not know you have, and create more options for how you move and live.

Because the goal isn’t simply to exercise a certain amount. It’s to feel better and become more capable, adaptable, and at home in your body.

How do we build a more responsive body?

In Rouleau class, we practice things that ask your body to notice, organize, adapt and respond:

  • Find your centre - through foot and hand contact, verticality, breath, body mapping and centre-of-gravity awareness.
  • Build usable strength - with body weight, bands, sliders, isometrics, squats, lunges, pushing, and pulling.
  • Challenge your balance - not just by standing still, but by shifting, stepping, reaching, rotating and recovering when your centre moves.
  • Connect more of your body - developing stronger foot-to-core, hand-to-core and cross-body relationships so movement becomes more coordinated, efficient, and graceful.
  • Explore different ways of moving - rotation, side bending, single-leg work, gait, floor transitions, rhythm, recoil and changes of direction.
  • Practice responding to the unexpected - catching your balance, changing course, managing asymmetrical loads and staying organized as the challenge increases.
  • Learn how to recover - between efforts, between workouts, and after something has challenged your body more than expected.

The question we keep coming back to is:

When life surprises you, how well does your body respond?

What might you discover?

One of the most exciting things about practicing Rouleau is discovering how much your body can surprise you.

You may find a balance you didn’t know you had. Feel muscles and connections you’ve never noticed before. Move into a position that once felt unavailable. Catch yourself more quickly. Feel stronger, lighter, steadier - or simply more confident in all your movements.

That changes more than movement. It changes what you believe is possible.

💡 What if your hips got better with age?

What if instead of bracing for decline, you built hips that feel:

  • Strong enough to carry what matters — groceries, toddlers, or your own weight up the stairs
  • Mobile and stable — so you can squat, twist, and move without second-guessing yourself
  • Ready for hikes, dancing, stairs, or just standing at the stove without shifting from foot to foot
  • Like a source of power, not pain

In this workshop, you'll:

  • Learn what your hips (and knees and feet) actually need to stay strong for life
  • Understand why your yoga class might be making things worse — and how to modify without anyone else knowing
  • Practice movement patterns that protect your joints and help them get stronger over time
  • Get tools you can use right away, feel the results immediately and use for the rest of your life

You won’t just learn about your hips. You’ll feel what it’s like to move from strength.

Hear what Rouleau practitioners are saying...

“Physically, I feel amazing. I used to go on a beach walk for about an hour, and just at the end of it, my hips were just screaming at me. It was like a couple of years of that. I'm starting to forget I ever had an issue there. I even did a three-hour hike a month ago or something -and I didn't even think about it. I had no pain. I just didn’t even realize it."
Cecily, Australia
“My student was supposed to get her hip replaced. But after a year, her doctor told her, ‘Your hips look great. You don’t need a replacement right now. We don’t need to do surgery.’ And she said, ‘It’s the Rouleau classes.’ She comes three times a week. She’s so dedicated."
Wendy, Germany
“I was in an accident and suffered a pretty significant brain concussion. I was on a walker for 3 months. Couldn’t drive for 9. I made more progress in 6 months with Rouleau than I made in a year of neuro rehab. I’m doing things that I really was terrified to do. I’m probably close to where I was before my injury. But that’s not good enough anymore. I want to keep pushing myself and challenging myself.”
Melanie, USA
“I talk about being the poster child for this work because two years ago, I could hardly walk up the stairs. I had so much inflammation, so much discomfort. My doctor suggested I would need surgery. But I’ve been doing this work every single day since then. My knees are doing great. I go days - weeks, even - without even thinking that I ever had any pain in them. It’s remarkable.”
Barbara, Canada
“At 42, I’ve never felt more capable. I’m doing things I used to be terrified of. My kids think their mommy is strong and they are super impressed by that - I enjoy showing them little things they can use in their everyday life. Even emptying the dishwasher - I’m intentionally trying to use those parts of my body. I know now it helps prevent injury, but it also makes you stronger.”
Danielle, USA
“Going to get groceries, I used to have to hold on to the cart. I used to just focus on the pain-and the lack of mobility. But now when I come here, I feel joy. This lifts me up every week. It’s making me feel better about me.”
Kim, CANADA

Who wrote this page anyways?

Hi there - I’m Denise, founder of Rouleau.

I’ve spent my life studying movement in every form, from fitness and massage therapy to somatics and beyond.

Along the way, I discovered something missing: a way of moving that doesn’t just train your body, but teaches it how to heal.

That’s why I created Rouleau - to give you a path back to strength, stability, and the quiet confidence of feeling at home in your body again.

At its core, Rouleau is built on one truth: your body is designed to heal and adapt. My work, and the work of every Rouleau teacher, is simply to help you remember how.
